Morgans Hotel to close for $9 mln reno until Sept. 16
These are the last days of the Morgans Hotel before it closes this Sunday for a summer's worth of renovations.
The planned reopening date is September 16, according to the hotel's website.
Morgan’s restaurant, Asia de Cuba, will remain open during the hotel's renovation, a hotel representative told NewYorkology.
Considered the first boutique hotel when it opened in 1984, the Mogans hotel had an occupancy rate of 79.9 percent during the three-months just ended March 31, a 5.4 percent decline from a year earlier, according to the quarterly report of parent company Morgans Hotel Group. The average daily rate at the hotel climbed 12 percent for that same period -- to $311.23 a night from $277.66 a year earlier.
The $9 million renovation under the direction of designer Andree Putnam will cover the lobby, guestrooms and penthouse, Crain's reported in March. The hotel's “living room space will get a high-tech business center.
One of its sister properties, the Royalton, compleed renovations last year. It's worth noting that the Royalton actually re-opened on time, a rarity in a city where it's common for hotels to miss their opening dates by several months.
Morgans is located at 237 Madison Ave., map.

Correction: This article originally stated the Morgans was designed by Philippe Starck, but rather, he did the Royalton. Putnam was also the original Morgans designer.
