Intrepid remains at Staten Island for Fleet Week '08

Since Fleet Week starts on Wednesday, it seemed a good time for a peak at the progress on the USS Intrepid, which is still undergoing renovation out at Staten Island's Homeport Pier these days.
The retired aircraft carrier, which has served as a floating military museum on the Hudson, was rather dramatically pulled out of the mud on December 5, 2006, (which followed an unsuccessful attempt on November 6.) It first was pulled across the New York harbor for repairs in New Jersey, and then a year ago was taken to Staten Island for more work.
The webcam on its deck is still live. Or you can catch a glimpse yourself from Front Street, map, with the Verrazano Bridge in the distance.
The Intrepid is scheduled to return to Manhattan's renovated Pier 86 on October 2, with the museum's grand reopening set for November 8, 2008.
The museum's recent e-newsletter offered this update:The Intrepid's helicopter collection has grown to six complete machines with the recent additions of our freshly restored UH-1A Huey and HUP-2 Retriever. Recently, the aircraft were hoisted aboard Intrepid after being shipped back from the Thomarios Company of Akron, Ohio where they had been restored. The HUP-2 returned to Intrepid's decks for the first time since its service aboard Intrepid in the 1950's. Picture credit: Amy Langfield/NewYorkology.
