Fleet Week gets 9 ships, Blue Angels, Osprey, Raptor

fleetweeknyc07.JPG

Fleet Week begins Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. with the parade of ships -- stretching from the Verrazano to George Washington bridges -- and a miltary aircraft fly-over.

(Update: See video and pictures of the Fleet Week parade of ships and flyover.)

Nine ships will take part this year -- USS Kearsarge, USS Leyte Gulf, USS Monterey, USS Nitze, USS The Sullivans, USCGC Ida Lewis, and from Canada, HMCS Toronto, HMCS St. Johns and HMCS Preserver.

The Marines' MV-22 Osprey tilt-rotor aircraft will also be on display on the deck of the USS Kearsarge.

The week of events includes, helicopter raid demonstrations, Marine Days (on Friday and Saturday,) and many of the ships will be open for tours, along with special units such as the Mark V Special Operations Craft used by Navy SEALs. See the full schedule for times and locations.

In addition to the flyover with the parade of ships, you can expect to see Navy aircraft in a number of New York locations in the coming days, including at the Brooklyn Bridge 125th Birthday Celebration on Thursday and this weekned's New York Air Show at Jones Beach State Park -- which has confirmed it will get an F-22 Raptor along with the Blue Angels.

The best NYC webcams for the parade of ships should be the Statue of Liberty, Pier A from Hoboken, Pier 40 on the Hudson, Pier 86 on the Hudson, part of the Hudson from Midtown and the Hudson from Weehawken.
