First cherry blossoms peaking at Brooklyn Botanic

firstcherrytreepink.jpg

Hanami -- the start of cherry-blossom season -- officially starts at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden on Saturday, but a few of the trees have jumped the gun, including two that are already in peak bloom.

As indicated on the online blossom status map, one tree inthe Japanese Garden is in full bloom, as is another on the cherry walk. However, most of the trees are still bare or leaves, with only tiny buds emerging. (You can also find some cherry trees in full bloom in the Brooklyn Museum's parking lot, which abuts the Brooklyn Botanic Garden.)

This year's Sakura Matsuri cherry blossom festival is scheduled for May 3 and 4.
