Feds limit Newark, JFK flights to 83 per hour at peak

newarkdelays.jpgNew Jersey's Newark Liberty Airport will be forced to reduce by 13 percent the number of flights it schedules at peak periods under a federal plan to reduce delays that start in the NYC-metro area and then ripple across the country.

The new limit of 83 flights per hour, announced Monday by Department of Transportation Secretary Mary Peters, is the same limit earlier imposed on John F. Kennedy International Airport. The JFK limit will take effect on Saturday. The Newark limit will start in May. Both caps will stay in place for two years.

Caps are already in place at LaGuardia.

At JFK, the on-time performance is actually improving, according to the Associated Press, which examined records for Nov. 1 to Jan. 31. During those months, 73 percent of all arrivals and departures were on time at JFK, compared with only 67 percent for the same period a year earlier.
