Subway guide for the Giants ticker-tape parade
It's going to be a madhouse in Lower Manhattan on Tuesday morning as the New York Giants are feted with a ticker-tape parade up Broadway to City Hall. The MTA has just issued its advice on which subways to take, and which to avoid, in order to reach the parade, which starts at 11 a.m. at the Alexander Hamilton Customs House (now used as the Smithsonian's National Museum of the American Indian.)
The transit crux:
Although the Lexington Avenue line serves the Brooklyn Bridge - City Hall, Fulton Street - Broadway Nassau, Wall Street, and Bowling Green stations, Giants fans are urged to avoid the 4 - 5 - 6 lines due to normal weekday rush hour crowding along the corridor.
Instead, fans are urged to use the 1 line or the R or W lines to Rector Street, or the E to World Trade Center. Fans should also consider taking the 2 or 3 lines to Chambers Street or Wall Street, and the J to the Broad Street station. Crowding conditions at the City Hall R and W station, Park Place 2 and 3 station and nearby 4 - 5 - 6 Brooklyn Bridge - City Hall station may force trains to bypass those stations during the parade and ceremony at City Hall. See the MTA's full release for details on bus service and other tips.
Update: Metro-North Railroad will add additional trains on Tuesday morning, but no word yet from NJ Transit.
Update II: The Brooklyn Battery Tunnel will be especially impacted from "early morning until 2pm," the MTA warns.
Also of note, the Dept. of Transportation webcabs in Lower Manhattan will likely serve as fancams Tuesday, but none are positioned on the Broadway parade route.
Update III: Long Island RailRoad says it will will add extra service, as will NJ Transit.
Update IV: There will be a massive amount of parade-related street closures, starting as early as 6 a.m., according to the advisory from LowerManhattan.info.
