New downtown Sports Museum sets $27 admission
The Sports Museum of America has relaunched its website in advance of its Spring opening, and shockingly its reveals the admission price will be $27.
Seniors and students get a $3 discount, while children 4 to 14 will be charged $20.
To put that in perspective, the Met Museum and Museum of Modern Art each top out at $20 (through the Met technically costs only a penny since it's suggested donation, and MoMA has free hours each Friday.) The Guggenheim's $18 and the Whitney and American Museum of Natural History are each $15, but all have weekly free hours or suggested admission as well.
The only ticket on par with the Sports Museum price is Madame Tussaud's Wax Museum, where an adult admission is $29, and the Ripley's Believe it or Not Odditorium, which charges $24.95.
The museum will be the home for the Heisman Trophy, and an "interactive, multimedia experience connecting our visitors to the sports they love through leading technology as well as memorabilia and iconic artifacts donated by single-sport Halls of Fame, Museums, individual athletes and private collectors."
When the project was announced in 2005, it was noted the museum would be receiving $52 million of post-Sept. 11 Liberty Bonds. It's under construction at 26 Broadway, map.
