Ice cream goes organic at Boerum Hill's Blue Marble
Nichelle Stephens, a co-founder of the Cupcake Takes the Cake blog, is the new desserts correspondent for NewYorkology. She'll be hitting up desserts sweet and savory in all the boroughs. By day, she does bookkeeping and Tuesday nights she can be found laughing with some of the best female comics she can find at Chicks and Giggles at Ochi's Lounge.
With the recent spring-like weather this week, a scoop of ice cream sounds (and tastes) like a great idea. Brooklyn's Blue Marble serves organic ice cream, sorbet and frozen yogurt. Open since October 2007, Blue Marble is very eco-friendly with all of their ice cream made from grass-fed dairy from the Hudson Valley. Recently, I stopped by Blue Marble to sample some of the flavors.
Blue Marble has some delicious and inventive flavors including blackberry sorbet, ginger, hazelnut crunch, rum raisin, vanilla Swiss almond and strawberry. There's even frozen yogurt, aptly named "culture," which comes in one flavor only and tastes more like creme fraiche instead of the ubiquitous Tasti-D-Lite.
For the calorie conscious, Blue Marble serves ice cream scoops in two sizes, the mini marble which is 1.5 oz , ($1.50,) and the marble which is 3.5 oz. ($3.50) Hand-packed pints are $8.
Blue Marble is a nice addition to Boerum Hill area. The ice cream shop is open until 9 p.m., offers free wi-fi and even has a play corner for the kid-friendly neighborhood.
Blue Marble is located at 420 Atlantic Ave., map. (718) 858-1100.
