Flickr/Library of Congress unearths, tags old New York

NewYorkology contributor Vidiot commits journalism by night and explores NYC by day. He's especially interested in the infrastructure, transit, architectural wonders, drinking establishments, and hidden corners of the greatest city in the world. He joins NewYorkology today with a stagedive into the Bain News Service archives.
The Library of Congress and photo-sharing site Flickr have teamed up, asking users for help in classifying and tagging archival photos with keywords to assist future researchers.
One of the collections they've put online is of particular interest to NYC buffs and armchair time-travelers; the George Grantham Bain Collection features many photos of New York City taken by Bain News Service photographers from 1910 to 1915.
Highlights include shots of the Municipal and Woolworth buildings under construction, Coney Island's Luna Park and Dreamland amusement parks, suffragettes, socialists and snowstorms in Union Square, the opening of the New York Public Library , Maypoles in Central Park, horse-drawn carriages and a double-decker omnibus on Fifth Avenue , and the scene outside the White Star Lines offices shortly after the Titanic disaster of 1912.
