WTC memorial and museum opening delayed to 2011

2011 is the new opening date for the World Trade Center memorial and museum, due to an extra two-year delay "to reflect a more realistic schedule that became clear after construction began," according to the Associated Press.

However, the reflecting pools in the memorial should be built by 2009 and its surrounding plaza should open to the public a year later, officials with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey told the AP.

On Tuesday, the Port Authority was also expected to approve details for a large mall at the Ground Zero site, but that decision was delayed, Reuters reports.

The New York Times had reported that the 490,000-square-foot shopping center would be operated by Westfield Group, the same company that operated the shopping center under the Twin Towers with tenants including the Gap, Coach, Ann Taylor, J. Crew, Victoria's Secret and Banana Republic.

The new shopping center would be situated "at street level and above in three planned office towers along Church Street, as well as in the two-story concourses linking the site with subway lines and the PATH commuter rail station," the NY Times reportd in a seperate story on Tuesday.

"We're just working through the deal," an agency spokeswoman told Reuters in explaining the delay with Westfield.

The entire WTC site will eventually be home to the Freedom Tower, several other skyscrapers and a transit hub designed by Santiago Calatrava.
