Cunard's 3 Queens rendezvous in NY on January 13

(Update: NewYorkology has posted more current info on the three queens rendezvous and fireworks show.)
On Sunday January 13, Cunard's 3 Queens -- the QE2, the QM2 and the new Queen Victoria -- will meet up for the first time, in New York harbor.
The Queen Elizabeth 2 and the Queen Victoria will arrive in tandem to the Manhattan Cruise Ship Terminal as the Queen Victoria makes her initial trans-Atlantic sailing from England. The QM2 will dock at the Brooklyn Cruise Ship Terminal, a Cunard spokesman told NewYorkology via e-mail today.
None of the ships will stay overnight, and Cunard hasn't yet confirmed arrival, rendezvous or departure times. (Though recently the QM2 has been observed departing Brooklyn well after 6 p.m. And presumably any rendezvous would likely take place near the Statue of Liberty. Update: On December 10, the QM2 departed Brooklyn at 6:45 p.m.)
None of the ships will be open for public tours, but you will be able to see the ships from shore -- as well as by tour boat. The South Street Seaport Museum has scheduled a special four-hour 3 Queens viewing tour aboard Circle Line's Zephyr. It's priced at $125 per person (or $100 for museum members,) and cocktails and a buffet will be available. Boarding starts at 3:30 p.m. at Pier 16, with a 4 p.m. departure.
Reservations required; call (212) 748-8786 or purchase online.
Cunard hasn't yet released its recommendations for best places to watch the rendezvous, but NewYorkology's pick for best hotel bet would have to be the Ritz-Carlton Battery Park, as long as you get a harbor-facing room. Harbor-view rooms start at $570 for that night, but also check out their always-clever packages.
Another likely water view would be aboard the Staten Island Ferry, which is free. On weekends, those ferries depart every 30 minutes until 7:30 p.m., when it switches to hourly.
If you want to take your chances of catching the queens from Liberty or Ellis islands, you can book your tickets in advance for a Manhattan departure anytime from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Though both islands close well before 5 p.m.

This is the QE2 departing Brooklyn on a very hazy October 5, 2007 with the help of a few tugboats. The boat in between the QE2 and the Statue of Liberty is a Staten Island Ferry.

The seriously larger QM2 also uses Brooklyn. Here it is arriving the morning of May 29. Again, that's the Statue of Liberty in the distance and the blue and white boat in the front is a commuter ferry.
