Rockefeller Center tree lighting set for November 28
Update: The tree is here.
The Rockefeller Center tree, which is scheduled to arrive this Friday, will get its official lighting ceremony on November 28.
This year's tree is will be an 85-foot Norway spruce from the Shelton, Connecticut yard of Joseph and Judith Riunyaks, according to Connecticut Post.
The tree will be topped by a 9.5-foot, 550-pound Swarovski Star with more then 25,000 crystals and 1 million facets -- the largest ever for a Rock Center tree. (Of course you can buy a replica at the Swarovski stores at Rockefeller Center.)
The November 28 tree-lighting ceremony, scheduled to air live on NBC from 7 to 9 p.m., is open to anyone in the public willing to brave the crowds and the traffic to take in the celebrity-studded show.
Or watch via the Rockefeller Center webcam.
The tree will stay in the plaza until January 8, lit daily from 5:30 a.m. to 11:30 p.m.; all day on Christmas and 5:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. on New Year's Eve.
The Connecticut Post details the tree's mid-January plans:
After the holidays are over, the largest part of the tree's base is given to the U.S. Equestrian Team in New Jersey to be used as an obstacle jump. The remaining parts are ground up for mulch and used at Boy Scout campgrounds. Update: Also check out WNBC's live streaming video from its treecam.
