'No performances today at many Broadway theatres'

There is not yet any official word from the stagehands union that they will indeed strike Broadway starting this morning, but the contingency plan posted on the website for the Broadway producers makes it pretty clear it's happening:

Due to a strike by Local One, IATSE stagehands, there will be no performances today at many Broadway theatres. Off Broadway shows and several Broadway productions, including CYMBELINE, MARY POPPINS, MAURITIUS, PYGMALION, THE RITZ, THE 25TH ANNUAL PUTNAM COUNTY SPELLING BEE, XANADU and YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN will perform this week according to their normal schedules. However, the rest of the Broadway theatres are dark.
The stagehands have been working without a contract since July. negotiations with Broadway producers broke down earlier this week, reportedly over the number of stagehands that must be hired for each show.

lionkingmarquee.jpgThe website for the stagehands union, the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees, announces a meeting for 9 a.m. today.

The website for the League of American Theaters and Producers spells out how refunds will be granted for the canceled shows, making it clear that people who bought from third-party ticket agencies may not wind up happy. For those who used a credit card and bought directly from the box office or other primary sources such as Ticketmaster, Telecharge, IloveNYTheater.com, or the Broadway Ticket Center, "in most cases your card will automatically be credited." But if you paid by cash, you need to return to the point of purchase for a refund.

If you've already planned your trip into Manhattan and still want to see a big stage production, other options this weekend include the Radio City Christmas Spectacular, Cirque du Soleil's "Wintuk" at Madison Square Garden, Metropolitan Opera's "The Marriage of Figaro," (this afternoon,) "La Traviata" (tonight,) New York City Opera's "Vanessa" (on Saturday) and "Carmen," (on Sunday,) and the Off-Broadway shows. The Big Apple Circus is also set up at Lincoln Center through January 13, (though some weekend shows are already sold out.) See NewYorkology's November calendar for other options.
