It's official: Most Broadway theaters closed for strike

catchthegrinch.jpgBroadway stagehands have walked off the job, shutting down all but eight Broadway shows, first hitting "Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas" at 11 a.m. this morning.

The Broadway strike, by the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees, was called after negotiations broke down with the Broadway producers, represented by the League of American Theaters and Producers. The primary disagreement is over how many stagehands producers should be required to hire for each show.

According to the producers' league, the eight exempt shows are:
The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee
Cymbeline
Mary Poppins
Mauritius
Pygmalion
The Ritz
Xanadu
Young Frankenstein.

Those shows are in theaters covered by separate contracts.

See the League's website for details about refunds for shows canceled by the strike.
