Taxi drivers OK another strike over GPS - NY1
Drivers in one of New York's taxi cab unions last night approved a plan to walk off the job again to protest the city's new law that requires all cabs to install credit card machines and global positioning systems, NY1 is reporting.
Details of the taxi strike will be announced sometime in the next 24 hours, according to WABC.
In September, many drivers participated in a 48-hour strike that made it slightly more difficult to get a cab, but not in a significant way. But the big change was that the city institued a zone-pricing plan for the duration of the strike that replaced metered fares. Cabs were also allowed to pick up additional passengers even if they already had a fare in the vehicle.
The new rule, which went into effect Monday, requires every cab coming in for its annual inspection to have the equipment installed. Drivers have complained that the GPS units violate their privacy and that it's unfair that individual drivers must bear the cost of the equiment's installation, maintenance and service charges.
