Even if Broadway doesn't strike, Off-Broadway beckons

With a possible strike or lockout looming on Broadway, here's a look at what New York City critics have been recommending for Off-Broadway and even Off-Off Broadway.

The New York Times Off-Broadway critics' picks currently consist of "The All-American Sport of Bipartisan Bashing," "Altar Boyz," "American Sligo," "Dividing the Estate," Gone Missing," and "Masked." (The picks don't include any shows that are still in previews and haven't been reviewed.)

The NY Times also has a list of Off-Off-Broadway shows - sans a single critics' pick.

Keep in mind that Off-Broadway tickets are normally cheaper than Broadway, and TKTS has discounted Off-Broadway tickets as well.

Time Out New York's Off-Broadway critics' picks include "33 to Nothing," "American Sligo," "Blue Man Group," "Dividing the Estate," "Electra," "Forbidden Broadway: Rude Awakening," "Gone Missing," "Hotel Cassiopeia," "Jump," "Sive," "The Dining Room," "The Misanthrope," "The Power of Darkness," "Tings Dey Happen," "Altar Boyz," "Food for Thought" and "Comet in Moominland."

TIme Out's Off-Off Broadway list actually includes some critics' picks, including Taylor Mac's "The Young Ladies Of …"

Time Out also keeps a list of burlesque and variety shows in New York.

Terry Teachout, who covers theater for the Wall Street Journal and blogs at About Last Night, also gave a good review to "Dividing the Estate." Elsewhere, his most recent list of recommended shows includes only one other of the Off-Broadway variety:

The Fantasticks (musical, G, suitable for children old enough to enjoy a love story, reviewed here)
Elsewhere, Newsday likes "Rude Awakening," New York Magazine likes "Gone Missing," the Daily News says "salsa fans will eat up the pulsing song-filled tribute to the Cuban-born superstar" in "Celia," theater blogger Matthew Freeman suggests the new play "Departures" and NYTheatre.com's pick of the week is Leo Tolstoy's "The Power of Darkness."

And if nothing else, you can watch all of Broadway's "Legally Blonde" on MTV on October 13.
