'Luxury' bus DC2NY offers on-board wi-fi to D.C.
The Upgrade: Travel Better blog alerts readers that the Washington-to-New York route now has its own "luxury" bus service, complete with onbord wi-fi and a bathroom.
The new DC2NY bus costs a mere $40 roundtrip or $22 one-way if you pay in advance. (Cash-only walk-up rates are $50 and $25.)
But be warned, there are no outlets to plug in your laptop, seats are not reserved, alcohol is prohibited and the trip will take four to four and a half hours.
And then there's the final item on DC2NY FAQ page:
What does DC2NY mean by "Free on-board internet service" ?
DC2NY passengers will enjoy complimentary internet service while on-board. However, because of connection issues, this service cannot be guaranteed. A Washington Post reporter took the ride in August and noted its "roomy seats throughout and laptop-ready tables in the back."
Though Upgrade notes the frequency of service is still lacking, with "(f)ive buses on Mondays, for example, but only one a day on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays." DC2NY picks up and drops off near Penn Station in New York, and at two spots in D.C.: DuPont Circle and at 14th and I.
Taking Amtrak between the two cities can run between $67 and $209 one-way -- dependng on when you travel and whether you want the high-speed Acela train.
However, if you're traveling between New York and Boston, LimoLiner offers a more posh bus ride -- with free wi-fi, two channels of satellite TV, seatside power outlets, "clear and constant cell phone reception," worktables for meetings, reserved seating and a restroom. A one-way ticket is $79.
