Another NY taxi cab strike set for Monday, October 22

flowerpowertaxi.jpgThe Taxi Workers Alliance today called for its New York cab drivers to go on strike for 24 hours starting at 5 a.m. Monday, October 22 to protest the mandatory installation of in-taxi credit card machines and global positioning systems.

The union, which says it represents about 8,000 of the city's 44,000 cab drivers, said it will also picket at major transportation hubs and taxi garages that day, according to NY1.

The union held a 48-hour strike on September 5 and 6 over the same issue, with either 20 percent or 90 percent of cabbies participating -- depending on who you asked. It was indeed possible to hail a cab those days, but the pricing was different: The NYC Taxi and Limousine Commission instituted a zone-pricing plan, which also allowed drivers to pick up additional passengers even if they already had a fare in the vehicle.

Correction: The text of this entry has been corrected to state the strike is for Oct. 22 (though the headline had it right all along.)
