Delegates' Dining private during General Assembly
As the United Nations General Assembly convenes in New York later this month, the hotels will pack up, streets will be blocked off -- and the U.N. Delegates' Dining Room buffet will close to the public.
The dining room -- which is normally open just for lunch, even if you're a delegate from a powerful country with lots of weapons -- will close to the public from September 25 through October 5.
But any other weekday, the public can snag a table with East River views by jumping through just a few hoops. Reservations are required; leave your information on voicemail at (212) 963-7625. You need to bring photo i.d. and allow extra time to go through regular U.N. security along with the tourists and then get a special pass to the private elevator. Men are required to wear jackets. No shorts, jeans or sandals are allowed.
