September dates set for opera on a tanker in Brooklyn

Puccini's romantic "Il Tabarro" will be staged on the Brooklyn waterfront four evenings in September -- aboard a retired fuel tanker tied up to the dock at the container port.
Not coincidentally, the one-act, one-hour "Il Tabarro" is set on a barge tied up on the banks of the Seine. The tanker, the Mary Whalen, is docked at a pier in the Buttermilk Channel, which separates Brooklyn from Governors Island. The view of Lower Manhattan can be seen here in pictures taken onboard the tanker during the 2006 Open House New York.
The opera performances, by the Vertical Player Repertory, are set for September 7, 9, 14 and 16. Tickets are $25 each or $60 if you attend the pre-opera reception (with food and drink provided by Red Hook's Tini,) with reception proceeds benefiting non-profit PortSide NY's efforts to turn the Mary Whalen tanker into a floating museum and cultural center.
Even if you don't attend the reception, food and drink will be on sale before and after the performances.
The Mary Whalen is located at Red Hook Marine Terminal, Pier 9B at the currently screwed-up-by-construction intersection of Hamilton Avenue and Van Brunt Street, map. The B61 bus stops nearby.
Also of note - the Mary Whalen volunteer days will be switched to Saturdays instead of Sundays for August. If you want to pitch in to help prepare the tanker for the performances, you need to get your name on the list a day in advance to clear security at the container port.
