Algonquin's Matilda the cat gets the VIP birthday bash
Matilda, the house cat at the legendary Algonquin hotel will celebrate her birthday August 8 with a cat fashion show, live music and cocktails to benefit for the North Shore Animal League.
As noted in the Dorothy Parker Society's August newsletter: "If you have ever met Matilda, you can be sure she will be extremely indifferent to the affair."
Legend goes that the Algonquin has had a house cat since the 1930s when a stray was allowed to stay. Hamlet was the name of the first cat, as actor John Barrymore called for a theatrical name. Ever since, all the male cats have had the same name; all the females are Matilda.
The benefit will run from 3 to 7 p.m., with the music starting at 5 p.m. There will also be a feline adoption unit set up for the event.
If you log onto the hotel's contacts page, you'll see you can e-mail Matilda at matildaalgonquincat@algonquinhotel.com.
The Algonquin is located at 59 W. 44th St., map.
