Water Taxi delays floating pool ferry service to '08
Although the floating pool on the Brooklyn waterfront is scheduled to open the morning of July 4th, the New York Water Taxi will not be able to start service there until 2008, a company spokeswoman today told NewYorkology.
So that means you can disregard that portion of the brand new Water Taxi maps that say "Joralemon Street Opening Summer '07."
The floating pool (it's free!) is located between Piers 4 and 5, near the intersection of Furman and Joralemon streets, under the Brooklyn Heights Promenade.
You can walk to the pool from the Borough Hall subway station (2/3, 4/5, N/R/W or M,) or the Jay Street/Borough Hall station (A/C or F.) Take Joralmon Street to the water, as it's one of the few streets that go through. Or take the B61 or B63 buses to the end of Atlantic Avenue and walk north two blocks along Furman. If you walk over the Brooklyn Bridge, head straight down to the Brooklyn Ice Cream Factory and make a left onto industrial-looking Furman Street. Brooklyn Bridge Conservancy also says there will be shuttle buses from "the Boro Hall (Joralemon Street) and High Street (Cadman Plaza West) subway stations." If you're insane, you can try to snag one of the limited $20 parking spots.
The beach at the floating pool will be open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., seven days a week starting tomorrow. The pool itself will open daily from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
They are expecting crowds, as evidenced by new wristband details on the website for the Brooklyn Bridge Park Conservancy: The Floating Pool Lady has a maximum capacity of 175 persons. Swimmers will be issued colored wristbands for hour-long swim sessions on a first-come, first-serve basis. If you have to wait for a swim time, you can relax on Brooklyn Bridge Park Beach. The city parks department has already opened its 52 free pools for the season: the list. There are fewer than two dozen New York City hotels with pools.
It's also worth noting that all regular Water Taxi service is suspended for Independence Day, except for the fireworks cruises.
