Sports Museum of America sets April '08 debut for NYC

smalogo.jpgThe Sports Museum of America is back on track and now hopes to open downtown in April 2008 at a location on Broadway just across from the iconic 'Wall Street bull' statue.

The museum will serve as the permanent home of the Heisman Trophy and its annual presentation ceremony. It will also house the first women's sports hall of fame, the Billie Jean King International Women's Sports Center, along with "inspiring artifacts, films and engaging interactive exhibits to richly showcase the history, grandeur and significance of all sports in America."

Originally scheduled to open in 2006, the museum's publicity materials still sound the alarm of the need to revitalize Lower Manhattan after the terror attacks of 2001. The for-profit venture is financed in part with post-Sept. 11 Liberty Bonds that helped downtown business eventually bounce back after a severe multi-year drop-off from 2001.

The 35,000 square-foot museum will be located at 26 Broadway, map.
