Putin larger than life, fighting terror in NY harbor

bayonne.JPG

Not far from where the cruise ships dock and the Intrepid was recently resting in dry dock, there is a massive monument standing in tribute to those who died in the World Trade Center attacks.

putinface2.JPGAs a backdrop, there's a multi-story banner -- of presidents Bush and Putin.
“To the Struggle Against World Terrorism” is the name of the art work, displayed in its own waterfront park in Bayonne, N.J. The massive sculpture -- a framed teardrop in stainless steel -- is the work of Russian artist Zurab Tsereteli.

The New Yorker recently pointed out a few of the flaws in his fan base:
A Jersey City artists’ organization, for instance, called it “an insensitive, self-aggrandizing piece of pompousness by one of the world’s blatant self-promoters.”
Regardless of the quality of the art, it's slightly jarring seeing President Putin's massive profile gazing out toward the Statue of Liberty. On a recent Hidden Harbor Tour, it was far easier to see his mug than Bush, who holds down the banner's western front.

The next hidden harbor tour is July 18.
