Mary Whalen tanker sets Sunday volunteer days

Last open to the public as part of Open House New York, the retired fuel tanker Mary A. Whalen is seeking volunteers to come aboard Sunday to help get her in shape as she prepares to host mid-September performances of the opera "Il Tabarro."
The non-profit Portside New York is working to turn the 613-ton ship into a floating museum. It's currently docked on the Brooklyn side of the Buttermilk Channel at the edge of Red Hook.
(See NewYorkology's story about the Mary Whalen in dry dock at the Brooklyn Navy Yard in January.)
Sundays will become regular Volunteer Days for the Mary Whalen, from 1 to 6 p.m. with BBQ to follow. (BYO BBQ if you like.) To take part this Sunday, you need to RSVP by 6 p.m. Saturday (today) so your name will be on the list for security at the Red Hook container port.
Volunteers of all ages and skill levels are needed to chip in for at least two-hour stints. Wear clothes you can get dirty, and bring work gloves if you have them. This weekend's tasks focus on installation of PortSide's offices aboard the tanker: refinishing
two metal desks, moving cabinets, bookcases, and boxes from pier to ship and maybe putting chafing gear on docklines.
If you go, bring photo ID to the gate for American Stevedoring/Brooklyn Marine Terminal at Hamilton Avenue and Van Brunt Street in Brooklyn. RSVP to mail@portsidenewyork.org.
