Helicopter crashed into Hudson River - NY1
NY1 is reporting that a helicopter crashed into the Hudson River about 50 feet from the Lincoln Tunnel around 5 p.m. this evening.
A nearby boat has rescued two people. No other details as yet.
Update: 1010 WINS reports that eight people were on board and all were rescued, none with serious injuries.
In June 2005, two helicopters crashed into the East River only days apart. There were injuries in those crashes, but no fatalities.
Update II: The Newark Star-Ledger is reporting the helicopter was operated by Liberty Helicopters, which operates both charters and tourist sightseeing trips over the city.
A couple weeks before the 2005 crashes, NewYorkology went for a Liberty Helicopter flight over New York City.
Update III: The Star-Ledger now has a picture, showing the helicopter afloat on its pontoons.
(Editor’s 7 p.m. note: Still not a word about the crash on the websites for the New York Times, Daily News, Post, or even NY1 (which has been reporting about the crash on air.) Newsday/amNew York has been going with the AP report.)
