'Grease' previews at $121.50; standing room scheduled
The revival of "Grease" on Broadway, featuring a Danny and Sandy chosen by TV viewers of NBC's "You're the One That I Want," this week started previews at the Brooks Atkinson theater. Posted ticket prices indicate producers intend the show to remain there at least into 2008 - when all regular orchestra and front mezzanine seats will rise to $121.50 each.
That's actually the current price for those seats if you go on a Friday, Saturday or Sunday. Tuesday through Thursday performances are a mere $111.50. Rear mezzanine seats are $81.50 and $71.50.
Premium seats are selling for $251.50.
Last year, the average price paid for a ticket to a Broadway musical climbed to $77.88, according to the League of American Theatres and Producers.
Standing room tickets will likely become available after the August 19 opening night, a box office representative said Wednesday. (When "The Odd Couple" played the Brooks Atkinson in 2005, standing room tickets were $25 each, with up to 12 spots available at each performance.)
The hoped-for long run of the musical may be critic-proof seeing as how the previews are getting rave reviews in the official "Grease" fan forum. ("Sandy" Laura Osnes' mom is among the commenters on the boards.)
The posters at Talkin' Broadway's All That Chat are less enthusiastic. One commenter notes it's probably not ideal for kids younger than high-school age: "Definitely PG13. They sanitized some lyrics, and not others. It was inconsistent. They use the f word a few times. They changed the 'chick will cream' to 'chicks will scream'..."
The Brooks Atkinson theater is located at 256 W. 47th St., map.
