Ferry dispute may close Statue of Liberty in Oct. - Sun

Ferry service to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island could be suspended starting October 1 over a dispute between the company that currently provides the only boat service to the islands and the new company that won the contract to take over the exclusive transportation operations, according to a story in this morning's Sun.
In June, the National Parks Service selected Hornblower Cruises & Events to take over operations from Circle Line downtown, which for half a century has been the only company allowed to take the public to and from Liberty and Ellis islands.
The bidding process stipulated that the winner of the new contract -- if it wasn't Circle Line -- would be required to buy all of Circle Lines ferries at an as-yet-determined final price. Guess what the disputes's over.
The crux from the Sun:"We fully expect that they're going to come to terms on the transfer of the vessels," a spokesman for the National Park Service, Darren Boch, said. There is no contingency plan in place, however, if an agreement is not reached, he said. The contract start date could be changed under certain circumstances, he said.
