Cab drivers mull Sept. 1 strike over GPS requirement

The 8,400 cabbies represented by the Taxi Alliance may go on strike September 1 if they are required, as planned, to install GPS-tracking devices in their cars by the end of the year, according to the Daily News.

Cab drivers don;t like the global positioning system because of privacy issues and because each taxi cab owner will have to pay to install and maintain the equipment. But the city's Taxi and Limousine Commission sees it as a way to provide better directions and help passengers find items they left in the cab.

The Taxi Alliance does not represent all the city's cab drivers.
