'Spring Awakening,' 'Utopia' dominate Tony Awards

"Spring Awakening," the rock musical of teen angst and sexual awakening in 19th century Germany, was the big winner at tonight's Tony Awards, racking up eight trophies.

Top Stoppard's three-play epic "The Coast of Utopia" -- made up of "Voyage," "Shipwreck" and "Salvage" -- took home seven awards, the only multiple winner among plays.

"Grey Gardens," the dark musical based on the 1975 documentary about Jackie Kennedy's reclusive relatives, scored awards for its stars Christine Ebersole and
Mary Louise Wilson.

Among the surprises for the evening, Julie White grabbed best performance by a leading actress in a play in "The Little Dog Laughed," beating out Vanessa Redgrave, Angela Lansbury, Eve Best and Swoosie Kurtz.. David Hyde Pierce also surprised with the win in best performance by a leading actor in a musical for "Curtains."
