Pinching pennies with 'Grey Gardens'

If, like the mother-daughter duo of "Grey Gardens," your budget isn't quite what it used to be, there are a number of ways to get a seat to this season's third-most-Tony-winningest show on Broadway.

There are of course the usual deals to be had at TKTS, but the box office provides a few additional options.

Among the cheapest of all are the $36.50 balcony seats, which can be purchased in advance, but at the box office only.

The best deal may be the $56.50 seats in the rear mezzanine. Even though you're in the last two rows, it's still directly behind the $111.50 seats.

Student rush tickets are sold the day of show only, for $26.50 in cash, and only one per student i.d. Those tickets are up for grabs starting at 10 a.m. when the box office opens, except for the noon start-time on Sundays, and on matinee days, the evening show's rush tickets are available starting at 3 p.m.

If the show totally sells out (and on most nights it doesn't) standing-room only tickets will go on sale, one per person, cash only, for $36.50.

"Grey Gardens" tells the story of Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy Onassis' eccentric aunt and cousin, who fell on hard times and were living in a run-down mansion in the Hamptons with a bunch of cats. The pair were made famous in a 1975 documentary called "Grey Gardens." As the program for the musical states: "The events of the play are based on both fact and fiction." At this year's Tony Awards, Christine Ebersole was named best leading actress in a musical, Mary Louise Wilson was named best featured actress in a musical and William Ivey Long won for best costumes.

"Grey Gardens" plays the Walter Kerr Theatre, located at 219 W. 48th St., map.

(Editors note: The prices listed above or off by a quarter here and there from the the Grey Gardens official website, but it is what the box office last week said it was charging.)
