NYC building up to a dozen more kayak launch sites

kayakers.unitednations.JPG

There are currently 18 kayak launch sites in New York and the city has pledged to add as many as a dozen more, the New York Times reported last week.

A guide is in the works to offer suggested routes and safety tips for kayaks and canoes, but more rules and enforcement may come as well, according to the Times.

The Downtown Boathouse is among the organizations that offer free rides along NYC waterways -- nearly 23,000 in 2005. Their current Hudson spots are at Houston, 56th Street and 72nd Street. They're also operating one at Governors Island this summer.

Other groups offering free kayak rides in the area include the Long Island City Community Boathouse in Queens, the Gowanus Dredgers Canoe Club, Red Hook Boaters, Hoboken Cove Boathouse and the Sebago Canoe Club at Jamaica Bay, (which actually charges a $10 insurance fee.)
