Momofuku, L'Atelier, Le Bernardin nab James Beards
New York restaurants made out quite well at the annual national James Beard Awards handed out last night, with David Chang of Momofuku Noodle Bar declared rising star chef of the year, L'Atelier de Joël Robuchon at the Four Seasons named best new restaurant, and Le Bernardin's Michael Laskonis tapped as outstanding pastry chef.
In the specifically New York category, best chef honors went to David Waltuck of Chanterelle. His competition: Terrance Brennan of Picholine; Floyd Cardoz of Tabla; Wylie Dufresne of WD-50 and Gabriel Kreuther at The Modern at MoMA.
Thomas Keller, who runs Per Se at the Time Warner Center, was named outstanding restaurateur. Other NY nominess for that award were Keith McNally, (Balthazar;) Drew Nieporent, (Myriad Restaurant Group;) and Jean-Georges Vongerichten, (Jean Georges.)
