'Hair' in Central Park for Summer of Love anniversary
Marking the 40th anniversary of the Summer of Love, "Hair" will be staged in Central Park, probably for three performaces near the end of September, according to Playbill.
It's the work of Joe's Pub in the Park, a creative arm of The Public Theater, which originally staged the musical, called an "American Tribal Love Rock Musical."
The shows would play the Delacorte Theatre, the same place the Public stages its Shakespeare in the Park series.
"The performances are expected to fall sometime between Sept. 17-30," Playbill reports.
The Public isn't alone in it's love for the summer of love. The Whitney Museum of American Art this week opens "Summer of Love: Art of the Psychedelic Era," featuring paintings, photographs, sculptures and films from the 1960s and early '70s.
(New York magazine also has some suggestions on where to shop in New York for your own 60s-era goods. If you want the original stuff, see Wolfgang's Vault, which sells items from the original archives of Bill Graham Presents.)
Upstate, where the Bethel Woods Center for the Arts opened in 2006 on the site of Max Yasgur's farm, there are plans to open a Woodstock Festival museum later this year. This summer's Bethel Woods concert schedule includes Bob Dylan (June 30;) New York Philharmonic (July 7;) HIPPIEFEST (August 11;) and Arlo Guthrie & Richie Havens (August 17.)
