Gramercy Park no longer open first Saturday in May

gramercypark.sunshine.JPG

If you've been hoping to find out which day this spring Gramercy Park will open its gates to the public, you are out of luck.

gramercypark.march20.2007.JPGGramercy Park Day is no more, a representative of the Gramercy Park Block Association told NewYorkology on Tuesday. However, Manhattan's last private park will still open on Christmas Eve for caroling.

Until then, to get a key to the park, you'll need to buy one of those posh homes in the neighborhood, or get a room at the Gramercy Park Hotel.

The next big public event organized by the block association will be a free concert by the Greenwich Village Orchestra on June 14 at 6:30 p.m. -- but at Calvary Church.

Located at 21st and Park Avenue, Calvary Church isn't as exclusive as the park, but it does have its own list of notables, including Roosevelts, Vanderbilts and a Wharton. Opened in 1846, the Gothic Revival design was the work of James Renwick Jr., who also did Saint Patrick's Cathedral and Grace Church. Read more about the church's architecture and history from Francis Morrone (in pdf format.)
