Free summer concerts, events for Governors Island

Governors Island, the island in New York harbor most everyone forgets about because it was off-limits for so long, has announced its schedule of free public activities for 2007 - including concerts, Civil War re-enactments and an envoronmental lecture series.
Transportation to and from the island is free on boats that depart just north of the Staten Island Ferry terminal at the Battery Maritime Building. On weekends, you can walk around the the 172-acre former military outpost on your own, or go on a Wednesday, Thursday or Friday to take part in the free ranger-led tours of the old Castle Williams prison, battlements and Colonels' Row. The island opens for the season June 2 with a family festival of music, theater and arts and crafts activities. Other hightlights:
Saturday, June 9 - "Great Gatsby"-inspired afternoon of picnicking, dancing and music from Michael Arenella and the Dreamland Orchestra/ Jazz Age
Saturday, June 16 - Prisoners of 2nd Avenue play classic rock and blues
June 23 and 24 - Army Heritage Weekend
June 30 - performances by dannce troupe Dance China NY
August 12 and 13 - Civil War Living History Weekend
Every Saturday, the the City University of New York will offer lectures on climate change, ecology, weather and marine life in New York Harbor.
