Dogs go wild: new NY off-leash law takes effect today

dogwalker.april07.JPG

Starting today, dog owners can legally allow their pets to run free in many city parks before 9 a.m. and after 9 p.m. as long as they have proof of license and rabies vaccination. Most city parks are open 6 a.m. to 1 a.m. unless posted otherwise.

The full rules are available at the NYC parks webpage for dogs.

For general info about bringing your pet to new York City, see UrbanHound - New York or DogFriendly.com 's NYC guide.

A number of hotels also offer pet-friendly plans.

The Benjamin's Dream Dog package may be the most over-the-top, starting off with a choice of pet beds: a sofa bed, luxe bed or orthopaedic bed. It comes with a doggie bathrobe, toys, treats, extra sheets, sidewalk bags, use of the “Dog-On Television” DVD, and ceramic food and water bowls "resting in a wrought-iron stand with a chenille embroidered placemat for use during their stay. And in case Fido likes room service: "homemade Canine Cuisine with all natural, human-quality fresh foods such as salmon, tofu, or chicken with vegetables."

Most of New York's W hotels sell a Who Loves Your Pet package, (from $319,) which comes with a robe for your pet, pet treats, a city guide for dog stuff and a rooms outfitted with a special bed, floor mat and toy for your pet as well as food and water bowls.

The Muse's pampered pooch package, (from $249,) comes with an amenities basket -- and lots of rules: "no pets on the beds or furniture." Woof.

And the Tribeca Grand goes so far as to accommodate not only people who bring their pets - but people who wish they did. You can get a free goldfish to stay in your room if you ask.
