Broadway sold record 12.3 mln tickets in past season

Broadway sold 12.31 million tickets for the season ended May 27, a 2.6 percent increase that broke the record set a year earlier, according to Crain's.

The average ticket price went up for musicals, but down for plays, according to Variety:

Broken down by category, average price for musicals -- the mass-appeal genre that most often benefits from premium pricetags -- climbed $5.13, from $72.75 to $77.88. Average play ticket, however, was actually down, falling more than $2.50 from $66.68 to $64.14.
The top earners for the season were "Mary Poppins," "A Chorus Line and "The Coast of Utopia." U.S. tourists bought 5 million tickets while international visitors bought about 1.3 million.

Grosses were up 8.9 percent for the the year for a total af $939 milion, according to Playbill. The tally is based on data supplied by The League of American Theatres and Producers.

There were 35 new productions on Broadway this past season. The standouts, including "Spring Awakening," "Grey Gardens" and "The Coast of Utopia," are expected to make out quite well at the June 10 Tony Awards. Other long-running shows continue to play near-capacity houses, including "Jersey Boys," "Wicked" "Mamma Mia!" and "The Lion King."
