Aladdin Hotel, not even the worst hotel in New York
Here's more proof that you need to read up about your hotel before booking, especially when you think you're getting an amazing bargain.
The Aladdin just off Times Square is a "a hellhole of crime in a seedy hotel," the Daily News reports today, with supporting evidence like this: Inside the Aladdin Hotel, the manager packed heat while drugs, guns and hookers were all peddled for a price, according to court records and sources close to a probe by Manhattan District Attorney Robert Morgenthau. TripAdvisor ranks it No. 291 out of 303 in New York City. That may beg the question, "What could be worse?" According to Trip Advisor, the worst hotels in New York City are:
No. 291 - The Aladdin, 317 West 45th Street
No. 292 - Hotel Alexander, 306 West 94th Street

At the Travel Library, the Aladdin inexplicably gets three stars, but a 1.5 rating from guests. At Kayak.com, it gets only one star, but a five out of 10 average score from users. Yahoo Travel mentions the Aladdin's "126 newly renovated rooms." And SpanishNewYork.com also gives it something of an endorsement: The colorful Aladdin hotel offers an extremely good value in the heart of the Theater District/Times Square Area of Manhattan. Located on 45th Street just off 8th Avenue and across from the Martin Beck Theater. The Aladdin hotel is recommended as a budget hotel and an up-market hostel. Price: $20 -$85 per night.
