High in the Sky: Above restaurant, eat with The Hand

Sometimes you can be high in the sky, but still not have a lot to see. That's almost the case at Hilton's 21st-floor Above restaurant, where the best view is the top of Madame Tussauds creepy hand -- and the back of Times Square.
You can also watch to see if any New York Times employees saunter out on their deck for a smoke break (they don't,) or for critters fleeing the Carter Hotel, which was recently voted one of the 10 dirtiest hotels in the country.

The Hilton bills the hotel, located on 42nd Street about mid-block between Times Square and the Port Authority Bus Terminal, as the "heart of Times Square." However, it's not the New Year's-ball-drop heart of Times Square, but rather around the corner and half a block away.

That said, it's a prefectly fine place for lunch if you're on an expense account, staying in the hotel and need a working lunch with your boss - which is what the place looked to be filled with on a recent weekday. The service was fine, and the food was fine except for the salad and fries, and the price was typically hotel-steep -- including a $14 club sandwich, $16 hanger steak, $9 wine and $8 double espresso. (Read Gayot's review.)
Above is located at Hilton Times Square, 234 W. 42nd St., map. Entering at street level is a little disconcerting because there's not much more than a desk for the bellhops. Proceed to the elevator to get to the "lobby" floor, where you'll find hotel check-in, the Pinnacle bar (where martinis are $14, but there's free sushi on Thursdays) and Above restaurant.
More pictures after the jump.
