$100 airport security fast-lane maybe not so fast
The newish $100 (per year) Registered Traveler program fast-lane through airport security -- which is in use at JFK's terminals 1, 4 and 7 and at Newark's terminal B -- isn't all it's cracked up to be, according to the May issue of Budget Travel magazine.
Often it takes just as long as regular security, is only available at a handful of airports and can be prone to random rule changes, such as whether a traveler needs to take of his shoes, or whether a secondary ID is required. The magazine concludes: Being a member might save you time and aggravation -- but only at a handful of airports, during a peak travel time, if your shoes don't set off the scanner. Clear, the only program up and running so far, in March said 40,000 people have signed up for its Registered Traveler passes.
