St. Patrick's Day in New York City
The city will go all green this Saturday for the St. Patrick's Day Parade, which officially steps off at 11 a.m. from Fifth Avenue and 44th Street. It then heads straight up Fifth Avenue to 86th.
Get there early to see the Irish Queers protest the parade's anti-gay policies at 10:30 a.m. at W. 58th Street and Fifth Avenue. (New York City Council Speaker Christine Quinn, a lesbian, will actually be marching in the parade in Dublin, where gays are allowed.)
See the St. Patrick's drinking guides from New York Magazine, Shecky's, Murph Guide and Zagat.
There are a few things to keep in mind about transportation on St. Patrick's Day this year. The good news is that the MTA has decided it will keep the 7 train in service this weekend, unlike all other weekends through March 30 that it's on hiatus due to construction. The bad news is that the MTA has decided to ban all alcohol (even the unopened kind) from its Long Island Rail Road and Metro North trains on St. Patrick's Day.
On Friday March 16, the South Street Seaport Museum is open free from 5 to 9 p.m., focusing on Irish Immigrants of Manhattan. They're also opening a new exhibition: "Fighting Irishmen: Celebrating Celtic Prizefighters 1820-Present."
However, the Lower East Side Tenement Museum has pushed back the opening of its Moore Apartment, representing an Irish immigrant family in 1869. The debut is now scheduled for October.
