Restored 'King Cole' mural to return to St. Regis in May
The famous "Old King Cole' mural is now halfway restored and expected to return to the St. Regis hotel bar in May, according to the New York Times.
The Maxfield Parrish painting was originally commisisoned for the Knickerbocker Hotel on Times Square but was moved to the St. Regis in the mid-1930’s. A replacement has been hanging in the King Cole Bar since the original was removed in mid-January.
From the Times:
As for the king, “his face is so much more crisp and clear,” said Harriet Irgang, director of Rustin Levenson Art Conservation Associates, which is ministering to the mural in its Chelsea studio in Manhattan.
“He still looks like a merry old soul,” she added, “but his eyes now look more impish.” The St. Regis is located 2 E. 55th St., map.
