New delays for additional Brooklyn cruise terminal

Plans to convert Brooklyn's cargo port at Red Hook into a second cruise ship terminal have been put on hold -- possibly for eight months -- the Daily News reports, because the Port Authority has agreed it will not kick out American Stevedoring's longshoremen when their lease expires March 31.
From the Daily News:
Instead, proposed changes to the waterfront are expected to require City Council approval, pushing back plans to build a second cruise ship terminal, hotel, beer garden, beverage distributor and maritime businesses. ...

It was unclear how long the plan would be on hold, but it will be at least eight months before hearings are completed.
Gritty Red Hook hosted its first ship, Carnival's Oriana, in September 2005, but the $56 million terminal didn't officially open until April 15, 2006 with the arrival of Queen Mary 2. The terminal is now used only by Carnival's Cunard and Princess lines. Further conversion of the docks has run into opposition from people who want to preserve the longshoreman jobs, retain the industrial character of the neighborhood and maintain a New York-area cargo port that would be accessible if an accident or attack closed the major cargo channel at Staten Island and New Jersey.

Earlier this week, the Post put together a list of bargain cruises around the world. The only New York route to make the list was a pair of QM2 April sailings between Brooklyn and Southampton, England. Prices for the 6-night cruise start at $1,299 per person.

After the jump, a picture of how the terminal looked earlier this week after a snowfall.
