NYC-area airport delays worsened in 2006
Among large airports in the United States, you can do no worse than flying through Newark or Laguardia, according to the 2006 airline delay data released by the federal Bureau of Transportation Statistics.
Kennedy Airport, is now only the fourth worst, up from third-worst a year earlier.
Flights to all three airports were delayed more than 30 percent of the time.
From the Bloomberg report: "It's the most congested 25 miles of airspace in the world, and that's not going to get much better,'' said Marc LaVorgna, a spokesman for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which operates the three big airports.
In 2006, a daily average of 3,835 commercial and general aviation flights used the airspace above New York, the most ever, and the number continues to climb each year, LaVorgna said. Nowhere else are three airports of their size so close together, he said. Also worsening nationwide: mishandled baggage.
