'Grease' audience doesn't really have final vote

It's Sunday and that means yet another episode of NBC's "You're the One That I Want" reality-type show that's supposed to let the audience select the lead roles for this summer's Broadway production of "Grease."

But that's not what's been happening on the show thus far. Last week's episode moved the goal posts yet again. America was urged to call in and vote for their favorite "Sandy" and "Danny," with the promise the low-vote getters would get booted from the show. But apparently the producers didn't like the resuts of the voting, so they devised a new contest that would set the bottom-two males and bottom-two-females to compete in a sing-off judged by its Broadway panelists.

The new rules were explained by host Billy Bush to the four contestants in the sing-off:

For two of you, it could all end tonight. And if it came down to votes alone, Jason and Allie would be out of the competition. You two were in fact America's least favorite Danny and Sandy and received the lowest number of votes. But there is still hope the panel may decide to save you tonight.
The judges disagreed with America, but confirmed the outcome forecast here: "NewYorkology's prediction: Matt and Ashley A., the two who were kicked off and brought back, will be the ones voted off."

In declaring the judges' decision, "Grease" producer David Ian seemed to undermine not only the America-votes concept, but the premise of the open casting call to make the girl/boy-next-door a Broadway star:
The Danny we're going to save tonight, basically because Broadway is no place for beginners, is Jason. ...

The Sandy we're going to save, for no other reason than we have no idea why she was in the botton two, is Allie.
The judges' favorites so far, including those of last week's guest judge Anderw Lloyd Webber, are Laura Osnes and Derek Keeling.

Tonight, Jon Secada will serve as guest judge. "Remember, it us up to you, America." (Except that "Rules and procedures are subject to change at Producer’s discretion without notice.")
