BA adds £240-second bag fee; U.S. exempt for now

Just after Spirit Airlines announced it would start charging customers who needed to check more than one piece of luggage, venerable British Airways is quietly following suit, but with an outrageous £240-second-bag fee for round-trip long-haul flights, according to the Telegraph.

For now, its flights to America are exempt.

But the way they're implementing it should be a reminder to read the fine print whenever you travel. From the Telegraph:

But the first that many BA customers will know about the change will be when they check in at airports next week.

The airline confirmed yesterday that its sales staff were not instructed to tell customers in advance when they booked their tickets.

"They will tell people if they ask about our baggage policy," said a spokesman. "But it is on our website."
As for Spirit, they're charging $10 for a second bag; $100 for a third.

(Editor's Note: This item was briefly posted without mention of the exemption for the U.S., but that version has been killed off.)
