2006 was busiest year for NYC subways: 1.5 bln riders

crowdedsubway.JPG2006 was the busiest year yet for New York City subways, with 1.5 billion people riding the trains, a 3.4 percent increase from a year earlier, according to figures released today by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority.

That beats the previous record, set in 1952, of 1.55 billion, Crain's reports.

On an average weekday, 4.9 milion people ride the subway, up 2.7 percent from 2005.

But apparently more people doesn't mean more crime. The Daily News reports that subway crime is at its lowest in decades and that NYPD statistics show crime dropped 18 in January 2007 from the same period a year earlier.
