Yankee Stadium to host 2008 All-Star Game
Yankee Stadium has been selected to host Major League Baseball's 2008 All-Star Game on July 15, 2008, Commissioner Bud Selig announced today.
"When you think of Yankee Stadium, it is the most, in my opinion, famous cathedral in baseball, and I think the most famous stadium in the world," Selig said during a press conference with Mayor Michael Bloomberg. "We believe this is really the way we can honor a cathedral that has meant so much to this sport for so long, by coming to New York in July 2008 and having the game here."
Of course the Yankees will abandon it at the end of the 2008 season, moving to a new stadium nearby for 2009.
Bloomberg noted that Yankee Stadium has hosted the All-Star Game three times before, in 1930, 1960, 1977, and the Yankees went on to reach the World Series each of those years. (Although a story on the Yankees website says 1939, not 1930.)
Selig said the All-Star Game has changed much since '77, now made up of five days of events, including the Home-Run Derby and Fan Fest.
And thanks to the magic of marketing, you can already order a 2008 All-Star Game T-shirt from Major Leage Baseball for $20.
