Voting begins to cast Sandy and Danny for 'Grease'
NBC's "You're the One That I Want" aired live tonight in hopes of whittling the field of Sandys and Dannys vying for the lead role in "Grease" on Broadway.
Luckily the show's getting better, as it had a miserable first few episodes. No one was actually eliminated tonight, though two earlier rejects were actually brought back for no good reason.
Post-show voting will decide which two will get booted from the show next week. The judges had no lot to cast on this episode, but still weighed in with their favorites. Unlikable producer David Ian liked Derek (who sang "Crazy Little Thing Called Love,") and Ashley S. ("It’s in His Kiss.") Director and choreographer Kathleen Marshall went for ego-machine Austin ("Mony, Mony") and Allie ("I Love Rock n' Roll,") while Jim Jacobs, the co-creator of "Grease" went for Chad ("Signed, Sealed, Delivered, I'm Yours") and Kate ("All By Myself.")
Guest judge and plastic surgery fiend Olivia Newton-John didn't pick a favorite. Next week's guest judge, as rumored, will be producer and composer Andrew Lloyd Weber.
NewYorkology's prediction: Matt and Ashley A., the two who were kicked off and brought back, will be the ones voted off. But then again, it's up to America to call in and vote. According to the rules, "you may vote up to 10 times online per e-mail address or up to 200 times via telephone." The calls are toll-free from landlines.
Tickets are already on sale for "Grease" on Broadway. Previews begin July 24 at an as-yet unnamed theater with opening night set for August 16.
